The University of Toledo first fielded a football team in 1917 and they still play Big-time College football to this day, although they did not field teams in 1931, and 1943–1945. Since AP Poll first accounted for rankings of gridiron college squads in 1936 Toledo has finished in the Top 25 four times. Its highest finish came in 1970 when it ranked No. 12 after finishing 12–0–0. They have had legendary coaches from the teams debut under John Brandeberry and a 145-0 loss to Clarence Spears, Jack Murphy, Nick Saban, to Jason Candle.
